Learning
flamenco guitar
The most daunting aspect
of flamenco guitar to the beginner is the right hand technique.
While a good left hand technique will look almost the same
in many different styles of guitar, the flamenco right hand technique
is distinct and unique. It is therefore important to find
a good teacher from the beginning - learning from a book will usually
result in bad technical habits which will later be difficult to
rectify. Once a grounding in the technique has been achieved,
it is essential to start to learn about flamenco singing and dancing.
Flamenco guitar cannot be properly understood divorced from
its wider context, and accompaniment of the singing and dancing
is considered to be an essential part of learning the instrument.
Search out and get to know singers and dancers living in your
area. At this stage it is also a good idea to start learning
the Spanish language - at the very least you will be able to understand
some of the cante and therefore the emotional content behind
the forms, but also if you plan to take this further you will eventually
want to go to Spain. That's all for now; in the future I plan
to put some some guitar lessons on the site - let me know what you
would like to see!
